The market runs from 9am – noon in the auditorium atrium on the Rt. 43 side of the building, with 25 vendors selling fresh local produce including salad greens, turnips radishes, beets, winter squash, pie pumpkin, potatoes, and garlic. Also available: baked goods including artisanal breads, vegan and gluten free, pies, sweet breads, cookies, and pretzels; jams and jellies; maple syrup; honey; locally roasted coffee (hot and beans), grassfed meats, eggs, and cheese; goat cheese; chips and salsa, grain salads, hummus, soups, and more. Free parking in the circular drive in front or in the parking lots in back.

Get a jump on holiday shopping while supporting Kent students at the craft show, which runs from 9am – 3pm in the cafeteria and gymnasium, with many new crafters, concessions, and a free kids’ area. All proceeds will support health career technologies and cosmetology student competitions. Craft show admission is $1 at cafeteria doors, or at the end of hallway between auditorium and cafeteria. We’ve got three farmers (two OEFFA certified organic) growing excellent produce under high tunnels (unheated greenhouses), so there will be plenty of salad greens, kale, chard, turnips, carrots, beets, potatoes, winter squash and apples. Plus baked goods, jellies & jams, pierogies, grassfed meats and cheeses, eggs, goat cheese, goat milk, handmade fresh pasta, veggie patties, dried beans, corn meal, wheat flour, soups, chips & salsa, hummus, grain salads, locally roasted coffee, and more!

The cold, wet spring is definitely slowing down many of our farmers, and I’ve had more than one conversation about tractors and trucks getting stuck in the mud, but on opening day we expect to see some spring greens, and plenty of locally grown vegetable, herb, and flower starts for your home garden (some started with certified organic seeds and potting soil). We’ll have baked goods (including whole grain organic flour, gluten-free, and vegan), grassfed cheese, goat cheese, eggs, maple syrup, soap, lotion, salsa, guacamole, grain salads, bedding plants, artwork and more!

This year, we’re thrilled to have four Ohio Ecological Food and Farm Association Certified Organic farms participating in the market, along with many other farmers and gardeners who offer a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, herbs, flowers, and starts grown naturally without the use of herbicides or pesticides. We’re aware that it’s becoming increasingly important to citizens and consumers to know how and where their food was grown, and we’re working to make as much information available at point of sale as possible. Be sure to swing by the market’s table under the bridge to pick up a copy of our vendor map that details our dedicated farmers and producers, and the varieties of products available at the market.

When you’re done meeting with friends and neighbors, and stocking your crisper drawers, we hope you’ll also take time to visit some of Kent’s great downtown businesses – buying local strengthens our community!

FARMERS’ MARKET CHANGES MANAGEMENT

After 18 years at the Haymaker Farmers’ Market, founder Fritz Seefeldt has decided to step down as the volunteer manager. “I am committed to the long term success of the market and look forward to continuing to serve in an advisory role and on the market board of directors.  The market has been an integral part of our lives for so many years and I see this transition as something healthy for the market and for the Kent community.” said Seefeldt, who has brought the market to its current success after co-founding it with his wife Jo Anne and architect Rick Hawksley. The market on the corner of Summit St. and Franklin Ave. is one of the longest-running farmers’ markets in NE Ohio.

Customers and vendors alike have enjoyed Seefeldt’s easy-going approach, which made the market a Saturday morning mainstay of healthy shopping and entertainment. The board of directors of the Haymaker Farmers’ Market, an incorporated non-profit organization, will be searching for a replacement to take over the reigns for the 2011 market season, which starts May 28.

“We’ve got big shoes to fill,” said board member Cary James. “The comfortable ambiance of the market has been developed by a lot of hard work on Fritz’ part.” Other members of the board agree that some attributes will be easy to find in applicants, like having a car, or the ability to lift 40-lb umbrella stands. Other things can be learned, such as agricultural and health regulations, and writing grant applications. “But we’ll also need to find someone with good organizational skills, an interest in the market and Kent, and the ability to enforce our rules to keep market harmony,” continued James. “We’d hate to lose the great atmosphere.”

Applications for the Market Manager position will be accepted by the board until March 15.
