In case you haven’t already heard, the market opens this coming Saturday, May 28, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. We’ll kick off the season with live music by Galgozy/Zeleny Duo who are making the local circuit for their final year together performing folk guitar, banjo, and vocals. Music is free every week from 10 a.m. to noon, and it provides a meaningful local soundtrack to our busy market, which has become a real destination in downtown Kent.

The cold, wet spring is definitely slowing down many of our farmers, and I’ve had more than one conversation about tractors and trucks getting stuck in the mud, but on opening day we expect to see some spring greens, and plenty of locally grown vegetable, herb, and flower starts for your home garden (some started with certified organic seeds and potting soil). We’ll have baked goods (including whole grain organic flour, gluten-free, and vegan), grassfed cheese, goat cheese, eggs, maple syrup, soap, lotion, salsa, guacamole, grain salads, bedding plants, artwork and more!

This year, we’re thrilled to have four Ohio Ecological Food and Farm Association Certified Organic farms participating in the market, along with many other farmers and gardeners who offer a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, herbs, flowers, and starts grown naturally without the use of herbicides or pesticides. We’re aware that it’s becoming increasingly important to citizens and consumers to know how and where their food was grown, and we’re working to make as much information available at point of sale as possible. Be sure to swing by the market’s table under the bridge to pick up a copy of our vendor map that details our dedicated farmers and producers, and the varieties of products available at the market.

When you’re done meeting with friends and neighbors, and stocking your crisper drawers, we hope you’ll also take time to visit some of Kent’s great downtown businesses – buying local strengthens our community!

    See you on Saturday!
